London Landmarks

As part of our London Through the Ages topic, we have been learning about the River Thames and some of the famous landmarks around it. We used charcoal to sketch some of the landmarks. The children used charcoal to create shades and tones and learned that not all the fine detail is needed when using charcoal. Here are a few examples of the art work completed. Miss Mcleod, Year 4's Samba Teacher, is currently visiting Brazil as part of her studies. 4B and 4C were lucky enough to be able to skype Brazil on Thursday to speak to her. The children were able to meet some of Miss Mcleod's colleagues and they played a piece of music that they had composed themselves. The children were also able to ask questions about the music and Brazil. Well done both Y4 classes for some thoughful questions as well as making a good impression on our Brazilian friends. A very exciting music lesson this week!

Welcome back - I hope you all had a fab Christmas break. It's good to see all the children back in school. They have worked hard this week to be fully focused on their learning. A good start - keep up the good work 4B.
Our first topic this term is 'London through the Ages'. The children will focus on some historical periods and learn about how life and the landscape has changed. As part of our Science topic, we will be investigating boat designs. We will hold our own London Boat Race (4B v 4C!) and the children will learn about the history of the race. An exciting term ahead!

Party Time!

Years 3and 4 came together yesterday to enjoy their christmas Party in the Hall. A good time was had by all. The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and behaved very well. Friendship Week

During Friendship Week we learnt about different aspects of bullying and how we can stop it. The children showed a good understanding of how hurtful bullying can be. During the week we completed a range of activities that included - drama, retelling stories through the use of comic strips as well as making friendship bracelets. The children found it very fiddly, but all worked hard and seemed to enjoy making their bracelets.

Close Encounters of the Dinosaur Kind!

Today, Year 4 went to the Natural History Museum and were in awe of the amazing dinosaurs that we saw. The moving T-Rex model was quite realistic and had most of us spell bound. The children were fantastic throughout the day and were a credit to the school, their families and themselves. Well done 4B - I think we can safely say that we had a brilliant time. The children have been working really hard this week to make a scaled down skeleton of themselves. This type of activity helps the children develop and use a number of different skills - not least patience and perseverance! Confession Time!

Remember the apple in the bottle mystery? Well the children have been thinking very creatively about how the apple ended up in the bottle. Poor old Mrs Kahn took most of the blame! So I guess I need to own up - it was me!!

I am lucky enough to have an apple tree in my garden. Back in April, when the apples were beginning to grow, an empty milk bottle was placed over an apple. The bottle was tied to the branch and the apple was allowed to grow inside the bottle. We kept a careful eye on it, to make sure that insects did not take a liking to it and eventually picked it the night before I brought it into class.

After showing the children the original, but seperate bottle and apple, I sneaked back into class at breaktime and swapped them with the apple in the bottle. Sorry!!

Dotty Art!

We have had a very busy couple of weeks. During International week we focused on Australia and in particular Aboriginal Art. The children learnt about the tools and techniques used in this traditional form of painting. They then painted a picture of an Australian animal of their choice using dot art. Come to our sharing assembly next Friday (30th Sept) to see the finished results! In the meantime, here are a few pictures of the children hard at work!

What a great first day! I really enjoyed meeting the children who have worked hard on their first day and I am looking forward to the year ahead.
There are some interesting topics coming up this term, including Skeletons, Food and Winter Celebrations - but more about that later. This week we are reminding ourselves of school expectations and team work as well as learning about how we like to learn.
Next week we will be learning about Australia and focusing on Aboriginal Artist Billy Stockman. Hopefully, we will have some good Aboriginal art to show on our blog - so watch this space!

If anybody has any old newspapers for our Art lessons next week, we would be grateful if you could bring them into school. Many thanks!

Hainault Forest trip

All the children had a fabulous time at the forest last week. The weather was brilliant and there were lots of interesting animals to see in their natural habitats.We also walked around the farm and some children drew the landscape and animals.

Roald Dahl Books

Over the past couple of weeks, we have been looking at Roald Dahl books, in particular the BFG. The children have experienced a range of activities from watching the DVD, reading the story, drawing picutes and writing. One of our writing activities was to describe Giant Land, where the BFG lived. The children worked together and were asked to think carefully about their choice of vocabulary. Here are a couple of extracts from the children's writing - Teann and Shivani wrote - The blazing sun shone into the BFG's dark, gloomy cave turning it rosy red. The ash clouds in sight covered the sun making the sky starless. STOMP! STOMP! the ground shook! Suddenly, Sopie smelt a horrible, whiffy odour that made her eyes burn. The smell got closer and closer. Sophie tried to climb down off the table. She felt something slimy. It was as slimy as the ockra that Mrs Clonkers had cooked last night. Rashima's, Geneva, Shakiera, Kieran and Ayaan wrote - The rocky, rough surface creaked as the BFG sprinted across the island. Sopie squealed. Suddenly, the smell of raw meat filled the air and made Sophie feel more frightened. The sight of a dribbling giant made Sophie coil up in the BFG's hand.

Model Making

In our topic, London through the Ages’, the children used reclaimable materials to make models of some famous landmarks. The children worked very hard and showed great patience and perseverance. Although it was messy and hard work the children had a lot of fun! Well done 4B – some great models.

We have been very busy this term. The children are enjoying our London through the ages topic, some of the homework projects have been brilliant and will be on display in the school.Well done children. Congratulations also to Shivani, Kara, Emily, Alena and Mary for their success in the Futsal competition, along with girls from 4G. Not only did they have a lot of fun, but they also came away runners up with Silver Medals.Well done girls!

Winter Celebrations

WOW! What a busy last few weeks of term. We have had 3 trips; Chigwell and Hainault Synagogue, Redbridge Drama Centre and the Church for our annual Christmas Concert. Redbridge Drama Centre were particularly impressed with the children’s behaviour and Rabbi Davis was impressed with their understanding of Judaism and the thoughtful questions they asked. Well done 4B!

The children have also had their Christmas Party and judging by the photos they took (see a few examples below), seemed to have had a good time!

I hope everybody has a great Christmas break and best wishes for the New Year. Keep safe and warm! I wonder if we’ll have a white Christmas…

Christmas Parties!

It's that time of year again...Christmas fun has descended on to John Bramston! Next week there will be lots of Christmas activities including our Year 4 Christmas Party. The party will take place on Wednesday 14th December in the afternoon. The children are allowed to BRING IN some clothes to change in to, in the afternoon. We would also ask that children bring a small amount of party food or drink.
Please do NOT bring in any food item which has any nuts in, any fizzy drinks or glass bottles.
Please only bring the food/drink in on Wednesday morning, we don't have anywhere to store it otherwise!

Making Skeletons!

Our recent skeleton topic gave us the opportunity to practise our maths and DT skills as well as develop our understanding of our bodies. The children made a scaled down version of their own skeleton. Firstly, they measured the length of each other’s bones. After halving the measurements, the children worked in groups to measure, cut and shape the bones. Finally, the children joined the bones together to produce a skeleton. Although the children worked hard, it was great fun! The pictures show Tommy’s, Stachys’s and Conor’s excellent effort. Well done boys!

The children had a fun week making Rice Krispie cakes. They learnt about following instructions, practised maths,melting and freezing as well as food hygiene. Well done children - the cakes were yummy!!

This week we have begun a new topic - Food, Glorious Food. We will be looking at liquids and solids and how some of these materials can change through for example melting and freezing. The children will be making rice krispie cakes to help them learn about these changes.

The children have settled very well into the new routines and we have had a fun couple of weeks getting to know each other.As part of our 'X Factor' topic, this week the children visited Hainault library to research a 'significant person'of their choice. They were able to use the internet service as well as the great range of books available. Some children were able to borrow books as they took along their library cards. All the children were very well-behaved and made good use of the resources available.

Next week, we will continue to explore the 'X Factor', but we will be looking closer to home - Parents, Grandparents etc. The children will be asked to interview a significant person in their family and during the week we will discuss how/why they think their chosen family member has the X factor!

Congratulations also to Geneva and Emily-Jane who were chosen as 'Pupils of the Week' for their continued hard work and positive attitude towards their learning. Well done girls - keep up the good work!

Trip to Science Museum

Trips to Fire Station and The Barbican

Well done to all of 4W following our trip to the fire station in Ilford. We were really impressed with the smoke filled room and the 'hazard' kitchen where we learnt a lot about the dangers of smoke and fires. Afterwards, I was particularly proud to hear that the fireman who led the session thought we were very well behaved and that we represented John Bramston School well. So a big thank you from me to all of 4W for showing how well behaved they can be on a school trip!
We are going to the Barbican Centre on Monday. Please remember to wear school uniform and bring a packed lunch. You will not need to bring any money. It should be an interesting day so that is something to look forward to.

Trip to Hainault Forest

The children walked all the way to the forest and had a great time turning over logs and investigating minibeasts and their habitats. It was really interesting to see the way that different animals had adapted to their habitats as we were studying them in our topic work. The ranger at the forest was really good and he gave us magnifying glasses to use for our investigations. We found centipedes, spiders, ants, moths, butterflies, ldybirds and much more.

Well done to the children for their behaviour and stamina this week!
We walked to Hainault Forest on Tuesday to look at habitats of different animals and minibeasts and the children thoroughly enjoyed the experience. On Thursday we walked to Redbridge Sports Centre to play tennis with the coaches which was great fun. We have had a busy, exciting and enjoyable week.

We are beginning a new project after half term called ‘It’s Electric’ where we will be learning all about electricity. We will be making electric circuits and learning how important it is to our lives, whilst also bearing in mind the dangers of electricity and how to keep safe. Your homework this half term is to do some research or make a model about electricity.

Samba Assembly

Y4W performed their Samba to the school on Wednesday. It was really fun. Here are some comments from our class:

Samba is good because you learn about different drums and songs at the same time.
The best bit is the drums and you know when to do the bit in your head as soon as you start playing.

My favourite part of the Samba is the singing because if you are not that good it would help you get better. I would recommend it 10 out of 10. I had loads of fun all thanks to Mr Newman and Mrs Dearing. The first time I played on the surdu I wasn’t very good but now I have got a lot better. I loved it when I did the Macarena dance.

We have had a very busy two weeks since term has begun. The children have worked very hard to investigate people who they feel are significant to them personally and to society as a whole- well done for your hard work and your fantastic biographies! We have had some great work about people such as Charles Dickens, the Queen, Michael Jackson and Einstein. What a wide range of characters to learn about!

Learning about Antarctica this week

On Tuesday 19th May Y4W looked at a book called Antarctic Adventures and we found a lot out about Antarctica .We found out that when it is summer in Antarctica the sun never goes down and when it is midnight they call the sun the midnight sun.

I think that it was interesting because I learnt that you can go up to a penguin and stroke them. We read a booklet about Lizzie Greenwood and she said that the seals lay on the ice and snore.

Other animals are the humpback whale, penguins, skuas and seals. We all wrote about it in a book and used a booklet with information. I really enjoyed it and we learnt about the midnight sun thanks to Mrs Worth.

There were 2 teams racing to be the first to get to the south pole .The race was between Amundsen’s Norwegian team vs Scott’s British team . Amunden got there first.

We also looked at a base called the Rothera Research Station .Y4W looked at animals that live in the South Pole and we found out that penguins, whales, dolphins, seals and skuas live there, not polar bears because they live in the North Pole.

We chose four winners and their pictures were displayed on the storyboard that is currently decorating the door of the class room~ so I am pleased to announce the winners as Marija, Ellie, Ammarah and Asher. Easter Holiday

We have had a very busy week. Our Tudor houses are all finished and we hope you enjoy having them to look at now they are at home! They are a fantastic achievement so well done children!
We have been learning about Easter and have finished our work in science this week about bodies. The children have surprised me with how knowledgeable they are about bones and muscles! They have written some excellent reports about them too, including diagrams. These were of a very high standard and many children even achieved their literacy targets whilst writing them.
Well done for all the hard work this term and I wish you all a peaceful Easter holiday.

Our Drama Session

On Monday we saw a man called Johnny. He worked for the Redbridge Drama Group. He was very cool. When we came in we played a game and we won it. After that, we did a freeze frame.

Everyone then was put in pairs and had to do a job together. Then we had to get the queen (Mrs Worth) a gift one pair were jousters and had to be the queens bodyguard they were Ayse & me (Scott). Here are some of the gifts: A Golden Carriage, cupcakes, fishes, horses, a golden jewellery box, a gold sword and a gold tennis racket.

On Monday 23rd March a man called Johnny came in and did some drama with us and we played some games. We did acting about the Tudors. Lucas and I acted like people who made jewellery. In the last part of the session Johnny said there was going to be a Tudor queen coming in to see our stuff that we made. But really it was Mrs Worth. She saved us till last but she said that we put a lot of effort in to it.

This week we have enjoyed lots of activities during Book Week. Here are some of the highlights:

This week we had a look at a story called Handas surprise. We tasted some fruit from the story, and then we voted for our favourite one of the fruits.
In P.E we had to learn an African dance to show to the other groups. After that we made our own African dance to show.

The children have written some information about our recent Samba performance:

On 12th of February 2009, Y4W and Y4SS did a samba performance. The classes practised since September. Everyone got to play an instrument these are some of them: surdus, caixas, tambourines, agogo bells, stick drums and ganzas.

Every Thursday we went into the hall to do samba. It was great fun. We sang songs with Lee and played instruments with Seth. We performed it to our parents and it was very noisy. People took photos and filmed.

Trip to Ilford Fire Station

On Monday 26th January 2009, The Y4 classes went to Ilford Fire Station by coach as a trip. It seemed like everybody was enjoying themselves. When we arrived there we went into a room where we watched a video about NEVER PLAY WITH MATCHES.

The video had a little firefly who wanted her light to light up brightly. There was a naughty cockroach who gave the firefly a lit match .The firefly’s wings caught fire and she dropped the match and it told us to never play with matches.

My favourite bit was when we went to the room which had smoke in. We were safe because we only looked through the window. It wasn’t real smoke it was fake. It looked scary.

Then we went into the hazard kitchen with a fire man .I n the room they had a toaster that was burnt and a wire that was left there .Then there was a newspaper on the cooker. It showed us how dangerous these things were.

They also showed us a car that’s been in a real car crash .The person was only going twenty miles an hour which isn’t very fast. They were wearing no seat belts and there were two head marks in the wind screen that’s why we should wear seatbelts.

Tudor House progress

We have been working hard on our Tudor houses and these two pictures show the progress made. The original frame was constructed in week 1 and stuck to the cardboard. In week 2 this was built upon and most of the class now have a frame for the house as you can see in the picture. We will keep you posted of our progress in the coming weeks.

A new year- lots of new things to learn!

Welcome back and Happy New Year!
We have really started the year with lots of new things to learn about. The children have worked so hard to produce some wonderful Tudor projects over the Christmas holiday. They seem to be really enjoying our topic work about the Tudors.

We are visiting Hainault Library on Tuesday and Ilford Fire Station on Monday 26th January. If you haven't already filled out a permission slip, please do so as soon as possible! We hope to enjoy our trips and be able to tell you about them in future blogs!

Holiday Project- Christmas Holiday 2008

We have really enjoyed studying the Ancient Egyptians this term.
Next term we will be studying the Tudors, so for our holiday project, we would like the children to investigate the Tudors. They can focus on any aspect that takes their fancy, and then it would be great to see their work displayed as a poster. This can be any size they like and make it as colourful and creative as possible! They may use books or the internet to find information.
Happy investigating! We look forward to seeing their work in January.

Our Pyramids

The children made some great pyramids over half term. I was very impressed with them. Well done children!

Tutankhamun masks

We had a very busy week last week. One of the highlights was finishing our Tutankhamun masks. We made them out of clay and finished them with blue and gold paint last week. They look fantastic! Hopefully we will have some pictures to show you soon!

We have also been thinking about Christmas and have started practising some carols. We plan to hold a Christmas concert on the 12th December- we will keep you posted with details nearer the time.
